01 · Developmental editing ↗
The developmental editor looks at the book’s shape: its central question, order, scope, argument, and the places where a reader may lose the thread.
A plain answer for first-time authors
A book editor reads closely and helps a manuscript become the book it is trying to be. The work may involve structure, sentences, consistency, or final-page accuracy, depending on where the book is in its life.
The short answer
A book editor helps you see what a reader will see, then works with you to make the manuscript clearer, stronger, and more fully itself. That work happens at three different levels, and the levels should not be confused.
The three kinds of editing
The developmental editor looks at the book’s shape: its central question, order, scope, argument, and the places where a reader may lose the thread.
The line editor works paragraph by paragraph and sentence by sentence, listening for rhythm, clarity, emphasis, and the writer’s own voice; copy editing, the technical consistency work of grammar, usage, names, references and citations, is part of this stage.
Copy editing in detail →The proofreader reads the final pages for dropped words, typos, spacing, and format slips that can survive earlier passes.
Which stage do you need?
First-time authors often need developmental attention when the draft is still finding its shape. Once the structure is sound, line-by-line editing can help the argument land; its copy-editing pass handles grammar, usage, names, references, citations, and technical consistency while the language and choices settle. Proofreading belongs on the final pages, after design or typesetting if possible.
The stages can overlap, but the order matters. It is hard to proofread a chapter whose structure is still moving.
Cost and hiring
Entry prices and a full pricing ladder are published on the pricing page. The final quote still follows word count, manuscript condition, subject, schedule, and stage; each project is quoted to the specific manuscript.
